The Three Capes Scenic Route Day Trip

If you’re staying in the greater Tillamook area, you may ask yourself; ‘How much touring can I accomplish in one day?’ or maybe ‘What else is there to do here once I’ve done the Tillamook Cheese Factory tour?’

If you head west from Tillamook, and explore along Hwy 131, you will find yourself on one of the most beautiful and fascinating drives on the Oregon coast. Not only will you observe the beautiful landscaping where the forest meets the sea, but there are half a dozen stops that feature culture, history, hiking and even award winning beer!

First, we’d like to point out that the particular forest that graces this area is filled with Sitka Spruce trees. These trees produce a unique scent that can be immensely enjoyed and not soon forgotten.

The point that is furthest North on the Three Capes Scenic Route is the Cape Meares lighthouse and gift shop. Not only is this a hot tourist spot where you can tour a vintage lighthouse, but its also a prime location for whale watching. Continuing on you’ll come across Cape Lookout. Cape Lookout State Park has a roomy day use area and just beyond it is a fantastic hiking trail that leads you out to sea with a magnificent view . Next you’ll come to Cape Kiwanda where you may see people hang gliding, surfing or fishing. The Three Capes Scenic Route winds down at Pacific City. There, you may have to make a tough choice: climb the immense Cape Kiwanda Sand Dune and then wind down at Pelican Pub and Brewery, or just go straight to the brewery. Either choice would clearly have its rewards.

If you’re planning a large gathering in Oceanside, Oregon you can contact Oceanside Beach Rentals! Sunset Dunes beach rental is an ideal location for your needs.

The home features a downstairs living room off the kitchen and an extra long dinner table. Upstairs there is a large open room with plenty of floor space. Bedroom doors line up along the walls. It’s an ideal space for a big family to get cozy in their pajamas and still enjoy the rest of the nights activities.

There are a variety of activities that can be enjoyed. The home includes a new hot tub, a competition size ping pong table, a sizable wet bar, several games, a DVD player and a game console. There is also a TV and DVD player in the master bedroom, but if you feel like doing nothing in particular, you can enjoy the ocean air out on the spacious deck. The deck extends across the front of the house on both levels and is fully accessible.

There is a family-friendly set-up in each bedroom. Two of the 5 bedrooms are set up to sleep 3, which is particularly helpful when traveling with a small child. Another bedroom holds two twin beds, for siblings or singles. There are 3 bedrooms upstairs and 2 bedrooms downstairs, including the master with an attached bath.

Oceanside beach is just a short drive up the road. It displays a quiet village atmosphere amidst a beautiful and fascinating beach. Why are there Quilt Squares in Tillamook?

Have you ever traveled through Tillamook and thought; what’s with all the quilt squares? Quilt trails, while wildly popular in some mid-west and eastern states, are not readily seen in the Pacific Northwest. In fact, the nearest quilt trail to Tillamook Bay is in Nebraska!

The quilt trail was founded in 2009 by representatives from several city and county organizations, with the goal of creating a tie between Tillamook’s rich cultural heritage and the talents of many modern day quilters. Each participating business was tasked with creating a unique quilt block which they felt accurately represented their business. Initially, 30 were mounted on local businesses and that number quickly grew to 81. While this pales in comparison to a 3,000 block quilt trail in the east, Tillamook’s 81 blocks is seen as an encouraging start. Who knows, maybe we’ll even see nearby counties joining the trail in the future?

If your interest in quilts is more than just a passing curiosity, we recommend stopping by the Latimer Quilt & Textile Center, while in Tillamook. The Latimer Quilt & Textile Center ’s mission is to “preserve, promote, display, facilitate the creation of and provide education about the textile arts”. For a small fee, you can take a tour of this extensive quilt museum. They feature both local and well known quilting techniques and artists, as well as historical and pleasantly personable displays. A room that is particularly impressive is the loom room. Typically in America, we travel to chain fabric stores and buy fabric shipped here from other countries. The Latimer Center gives a rare glimpse into the art of fabric weaving, as well as a vast array of weaving tools, and you can often view items that are currently in the works.

What’s It Like to Stay in Oceanside Oregon?

I recently stayed in a beach house rental in Oceanside Oregon. If you’re craving the peace and security of a small, quaint community, then I highly recommend it!

Before I go any further, I must address the most outstanding feature of this North Oregon coast town; the view! A permanent resident of this small community said that what drew her to Oceanside was the ‘best view on the Oregon coast’. Though I have yet to see all of the Oregon coast, I would be inclined to agree. The view was breathtaking and a pleasure to wake up to every morning!

Oceanside is a fantastic beach and it’s actually two beaches ‘for the price of one’. If you walk out on the beach and take a right, the beach ends at a steep hillside with a man-made tunnel. The tunnel meets up with a natural cave and leads to a small beach. It felt much like a porthole leading me to a wonderful place far away.

The town itself does not have a lot of amenities. There is a coffee shop, a simple cafe and two restaurants ( Brewin’ in the Wind and Roseanna’s ). Both restaurants are in the $$ range on Yelp and offer American cuisine. Many Yelpers praised Roseanna’s dinner menu and I can imagine the ambiance of the crashing waves and a wood burning stove would only enhance the experience. Brewin’ in the Wind has a more casual vibe and incorporates some South American flavors, such as mango salsa and chiles. I thought the food was fantastic and apparently plenty of people agreed because even in the off season it was bustling!

Oceanside Oregon is natural, upbuilding relaxation for one visitor, a couple or a family. Explore, enjoy the local restaurants, sip wine, eat out on your deck and enjoy the spectacular view!

OS Beach Rentals and Stimson Lumber Company Grant a Wish

When The Outdoor Dream Foundation set out to make a terminally ill teenager’s dream come true, we were happy to be called upon to help! OS Beach Rentals and Stimson Lumber Company sponsored a teen from North Carolina. When the family arrived, Oregon coast beach rental Sunset Dunes was provided for their use.

We’re thankful to The Outdoor Dream Foundation for the opportunity to participate in giving an upbuilding gift to such an exceptional teenager and his family!

Tillamook’s Lesser Known Cheese Company

My husband and I honeymooned in Napa Valley. Perhaps my fond memories of sipping wine and eating cheese and olives at V. Sattui Winery made my experience at The Blue Heron French Cheese Company all the more delightful! The Blue Heron French Cheese Factory has a charm not so different from the famous Napa Winery. They offer samples of local wines and french cheese, lunch may be obtained in their deli and the natural setting makes for a pleasant and relaxing experience.

If you’re just passing through, live in the area, or are staying in a beach rental, the Blue Heron Cheese Company would be an ideal choice for lunch or grocery. I fully intend to stop by and stock up on wine, brie and a few packaged goods next time I’m staying in the area.

When visiting the North Oregon coast, most Oregonians and tourists make a point of visiting the Tillamook Cheese Factory. Blue Heron French Cheese Company has been in Tillamook for over 30 years and is located just South of the cheese factory. Stop by and sample all the goodness!

Have You Visited the Cape Meares Lighthouse?

There are nine public lighthouses on the Oregon coast. You may have heard of some recent renovations that are going on right now to keep these lighthouses in top shape. North Oregon coast’s Cape Meares Lighthouse is one that will soon be undergoing renovation. Some of the plans for the lighthouse include a new glass door and a few exterior touch ups.

During the fall and spring months it is often raining in Tillamook County and the lighthouse floor begins to form puddles. To minimize this, the staff keeps the door closed, leaving guests to often wonder if the lighthouse is open. This will no longer be an issue. The glass door will allow the staff to keep the interior visible while closing out the rainy weather.

In 1993 the Cape Meares lighthouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. You may remember, however, that the lighthouse was vandalized in 2010 when two locals broke into the park and fired over a dozen shots. The windows were damaged as well as the original Fresnel lens that originated from Paris in 1888. It makes our heart happy to know that despite a few damaging actions, the lighthouse is still in operation and has continued to receive such TLC!

What is the Best Hike on the North Oregon Coast?

Tillamook County is home to many fun excursions and tourist spots. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of Oregon coast attractions on our beach house vacation rentals site. For now, we’d like to share with you a great idea for a half day excursion.

Many people come from Portland area to explore the North Oregon coast. Portland is famous for it’s many beautiful hiking trails, so the hiking standard a Portlander is accustomed to might compel them to ask: “What are the best hiking trails on the Oregon coast?” We feel that we can confidently answer that in as little as two words ‘Cape Lookout’.

Cape Lookout hiking trail extends out to sea in the shape of a peninsula, with ocean depths on all sides. It is approximately 2 miles each way and includes forest and ocean scenery all along the length of the trail. We highly recommend this hiking trail! We recommend doing this hike on a fair weather day. Check the local weather on our site! (Unfortunately, due to the magnificently high cliffside elements we cannot recommend Cape Lookout hiking trail to families with small children.)

Now that you’ve worked up an appetite, not too far down the road is a popular local brew pub called Pelican . If you live near Portland Oregon you may have seen their bottles on the beer isle at your local grocery store. Pelican Brew Pub is located right next to the beach in Pacific City, Oregon. The food is great, the beer is even better and large picturesque windows showcase the nearby waves!
